Alpha Arbutin Background

The brown coloration results from the pigments eumelanin and phaimelanin, which are produced in epidermal cells called melanocytes. The enzyme tyrosinase, usually inactive, is formed in these melanocytes. Its activation by UV light triggers off melanogenesis and causes series of enzymatic chemical reactions which finally lead to the formation of melanins.
Alpha Arbutin was developed to inhibit production of tyrosinase and so block melanin formation safely without causing additional side effects as an opposite to effects of hydroquinone and d-kojic acid.
